Brush up on those mushroom recipes because September celebrates this awesome edible fungi. There are many varieties to choose from, but remember, some mushrooms are poisonous. If you go out to harvest, take a field guide or someone who knows their fungi.
Please share your favorite recipes and photos of mushrooms with us on Facebook or Instagram. And I’ll be posting up some of my special mushroom creations to share as well.
September also hails National Breakfast Month, so enjoy more than just cereal for breakfast. Get creative in the kitchen with tofu scrambles, gluten free waffles and pancakes, and grains like kamut, quinoa, and, of course, oats. You may even want to experiment with that new breakfast craze: chia seeds.
Break out the rice cooker because it is National Rice Month. It’s also National Potato Month. I’ll be reposting some of my favorite rice articles and recipes for savory soups and stews that involve the potato.
Looking at some of the weekly observances for September, there is National Waffle Week, and National Vegetarian Week, which is good because September is also Vegan MoFo, the vegan food blogger’s month long celebration of all plant based foods and vegan-related items.
And if you are confused about when National Apple month is, don’t worry, I was too. All calendars indicate that apples are celebrated from September thru November. Don’t be surprised if I share an apple-related recipe or article during any of these months.
There are several more month-long food celebrations in September, but these are a few of my favorites. Here is a list of other food observances for the month of September.

- National Papaya Month

- National Organic Harvest Month
