I found a great South Indian cookbook, Dakshin: Vegetarian Cuisine from South India
with pretty authentic recipes. For awhile now I’ve wanted to tackle this cuisine, and have slowly been building the culinary muscle to attempt it. South Indian food is predominately vegetarian, and involves lots of dal, masala pastes, idli, and dosais. (More on idlis later).

Most of the blogs and books you find on Indian cooking are from the Northern part of the subcontinent. Or, if it is a general Indian cooking website, there is usually no distinction between the different regions. read more

Curry: A tale of cooks & conquerors by Lizzie Collingham is my current quest to further culinary knowledge. I’ve read a fourth of the book and learned more history then I was taught in high school about other countries. But I grew up in the West, in America, and here it is about cowboys and cows, not curries, vegetables, and Persian overlords.

This is not a recipe book, it is one person’s view of how curries evolved in India through the influence of other cultures. And it is an academic, not popular, view. read more

Poblano Chili Plant Wow! I didn’t realize it had been almost 6 months since my last post. Work got really, really busy. We had a bit of a break during the Holidays, and then came back full force!

I have found time to start up gardening. I am tired of high produce prices and low quality, gassed and hot house tomatoes, and having to spend almost $3.00 for herbs that cost that much for the seed.

This year I am growing Anaheim chili’s, cilantro, and basil. Being a Sonoran Cuisine Chef, the more chili’s I can grow, the better my salsa! read more
